We wanted to do a day trip from Zurich to Colmar (France). Was wondering if the Swiss Day Pass is valid for this return journey?

No. The Day Pass is only valid up to the border point (usually Basel SBB). Here you can find the area of validity in the downloads, where you can see how far you can travel.
