Bernina Express Tirano to Chur

SOLVED
Dhb123
New Author

We are a family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children who will be ages 8 and 12 when we plan to travel in July, 2023).

24 July, 2023 Tirano to Chur (Bernina Express)

25 July, 2023 Chur to Brig (Glacier Express), then Brig to Wengen

8 August, 2023 Wengen to Brig

For the Bernina Express and Glacier Express, we would like 1st class.

What is the least expensive way to take these trips?

Hello @Dhb123

Your itinerary means two long travel days on train, these can be very strenous for your children. The Glacier Express is 8 hours... In my opinion, you should take a one day stop somewhere before continuing. The Engadin is a lovely area.

I suggest the Swiss Travel Pass, which comes with the complentary Swiss Family Card - with it, your Children travel for free on most public transport.

Best regards,
Roland

Hotel in Wengen 13 night stay (booked)

8 August, 2023 Wengen to Brig 2nd class AND  Domodossola to Milano Centrale - Bologna Centrale - Prato Centrale - Lucca

NOTE: Internet indicates it is possible to purchase both portions at a Swiss Train Station from a window agent, yet you must explain you are using the Swiss Travel Pass for Wengen-Brig, and need to pay for the Domodossola to Milano Centrale (or maybe even to Lucca) portion,  Other option is to buy the  Domodossola to Lucca portion from Trenitalia online.

While in Wengen:

We plan to go up to the Jungfraujoch with reserved seats.

We may take other gondolas/cable cars in or near Wengen.

We would like to consider day trips by bus or train to nearby towns/villages (such as Grindelwald, Mürren, Haslital, or others within 1 hour (one way) by train or bus such as Interlaken, Spiez, Thun etc.).

We generally do not go to museums.

To save the most money, how and when should we buy these train tickets and what Swiss passes would most benefit us and how?

What additional information can I provide to help you assist us?

Regards,

Daniel
