Best value travel card for non-resident youth/student?

Hello,

I live in Switzerland and have a half-price rail pass. My son, who is 20 years old, a student, and who lives in England, will visit me 2 or 3 times this year. Each time, he will stay in Switzerland for 2-3 weeks. We will travel by train to different places, but not use the train every day.

I would like to know:

1. Is there a suitable pass for him to buy?

2. If so, which is the best? 

3. Can the pass be bought in advance by me, ready for when he arrives?
