Why there are 2 trains with the same platform, day, time and train number, but different route?

I booked the supersaver ticket to go directly from Interlaken West to Zurich Airport. My train is departing at 14:05 on Platform 1, train number IC 81 to Romanshorn, and arriving to Zurich Airport at 16:14. However, there is another IC 81 train from Interlaken West also departing at 14:05 on Platform 1 with same train number and direction but people will have to change the platform at Zurich HB Station and it will arrive to Zurich Airport at 16:12.

What is the difference between those two? Are they typically the same train but if people change the platform to another train, they would arrive at the destination a bit earlier? If not, what should I do to get on the correct train at the departure station?

Hi @nnth98

Are they typically the same train but if people change the platform to another train, they would arrive at the destination a bit earlier? - Exactly.

It is one and the same train from Interlaken to Zurich HB to Romanshorn.

The difference is, if peoole change at Zurich HB, and use another train to the airport, they arrive 2 minutes earlier at the airport than using the direct (your) train, IC 81.

Two minutes can matter in the dense Swiss train network, to catch another service.

That's all about it.

Best regards,
Roland
