Hello and welcome to the SBB Community. What would you like to do?
We would like to travel from Basel to Leuchtturm Rheinquelle on the train with our full size bikes. (They do not fold up or have a case).
We are not from Switzerland and do not understand the Swiss trains.
Can you tell me if it is possible to travel this route with our bikes?
Thanks so much
Regards
Charlie
Hi @cd1
You can take train IR 21 from Basel to Göschenen. From there, regional service to Andermatt and then to Oberalppass. Doable yet in summer only.
For IR21 you do not need a bike space reservation yet transportation is subject to availability of bike spaces. As a ticket, you could buy a bike day pass. For tickets & reservation in France, you have to check with SNCF.
See timetable here: www.sbb.ch, you can get the timetable from Arles. Enter Rheinquelle as destination.

Also, we want to travel with on the train with our bicycles from Geneve to Obergoms on May 15.
Will the snow be a problem on this route?
Thanks
No, Obergoms will be free of snow.
This is incredibly helpful.
The date of travel is June 8 2023.
There will be 2 people.
When I enter the details into google maps. It says I should travel from Arles to Geneve.
Is it better to travel from Arles to Geneve or Basel?
Good tip on the bike pass. Thanks
Is it possible to take the bikes on the regional train from Göschenen?
Thanks
Don't use Google maps for public transit in Switzerland. Instead use www.sbb.ch.
Whether it will be possible to bike there beginning of June? Not sure, the snow might not be gone completely by then.
Yes, you can take bikes on R services. Again, bike transport is only possible if there is enough space. A reservation is not possible on IR and R services.
OK. Thankyou so much.
No more google maps for me.
How do we find out if the snow is finished? Closer to the time, of course.
That's not predictable; all depends on the weather in spring and when it has been snowing for the last time in spring. Snow fall in late May is not uncommon. You would have to check again a month before travel.
Muttbach to Belvédère is a historic train, the Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke. You cannot take bikes on this train and you need special tickets & seat reservation as this is a privately owned railway company.
https://www.dfb.ch/en/stories/muttbach-belvedere
OK. Thanks
When I check one month before travel how will I know if the train line is open?
The train line is open 365 days. The trail to Rheinquelle will be the problem... You are biking in the mountains, not on a paved street.
OK. Thanks
Sorry for being so ignorant. We dont have snow in Australia (only a small amount in the middle of winter) and I am not familiar with the problems it might cause a train (and bikes for that matter).
You have been super patient with my questions. Thankyou
I actually want to travel from Arles, France to Leuchtturm Rheinquelle on the train with our full size bikes.
Perhaps you would also be able to help with that. I don't need to go to Basel. I just thought that would be the logical place to go via, Perhaps it is not the best way.

Hello @cd1
Taking the bikes is possible, yet with restrictions. Did you already consult this website?
