Train times between Germany, Switzerland and Italy

Dear Madam or Sirs,

Why is it that after 50 years train times have, in spite of, Gotthard and Ceneri base tunnels, little changed between Germany and Italy? I have a "Cooks continental Timetable" from 1973 showing "Rheingold" timing of 7:09hrs between Karlsruhe and Milan. Today the 09:11hrs ECE train takes 6:44hrs and others between 6:24 and 7:30hrs with changes of train.

My wife and I would like to take a holiday in S.Margherita Ligurien once again but, as we are both 76yrs the long journey is now a deterrent.

Yours Geoffrey and Ilona Beaven
