Smoking regulations are of major concern for the SBB and are a recurring topic which we see reflected in our customer enquiries – continuous feedback and queries attest to this. Smoking in itself and the subsequent left-over debris substantially compromises the quality of stay and the cleanliness of stations.
Personally, I think it will take time before this changeover will be fully accepted and until old habits change.
The fact is however, that we legally we do not have the right to issue fines for transgressions. The law for the “protection against passive smoking” is only applicable in completely closed rooms. This does not apply to platforms. We are obliged to comply to legal requirements. A tightening up of this law can only be made by the Confederation and the Cantons. Therefore we depend on the cooperation of the smokers that they keep to the rules out of respect and tolerance towards their fellow passengers.
Kind regards
