Luggage on train

We are traveling from Switzerland to Rome and would like to take the train but are not sure if we can have large luggage (what would normally be checked on a train) and if so, where is it stored and how is it kept safe from someone taking it? Thank you for any advice!

Luggage (suitcases) of normal size that you can take with you can be left on the luggage rack or at the entry to the coach. You are responsible for your luggage, so keep an eye on it!
